Virtela Helps Streamline Global Operations for Key Semiconductor Industry Supplier

Background: a global company that engages in the design, manufacture, marketing, and service of semiconductor processing equipment used in the fabrication of integrated circuits. Its products include etch systems, including dielectric etch products, conductor etch products, and resist strip products, as well as synergy cleaning products. The company markets its products and services primarily to companies involved in the production of semiconductors in the United States, Europe, Asia Pacific, Korea, and Japan.

Challenges: The company maintains offices and manufacturing facilities in over 15 countries in North America, Asia-Pac, and Europe, and over 3000 employees. But they lacked a global unified security infrastructure and they were unable to find comprehensive offering from incumbent service providers. Each company location managed their own LAN infrastructure creating inefficiency, lack of unified standards, processes, and documentation. The IT staff needed additional technical expertise to assist with initial design and ongoing management, and to enable IT to shift from reactive to proactive security management that would reduce the company’s overall risk exposure. The company also wanted to bolster its network security shield to protect valuable intellectual property. All of these needs were against a backdrop of a limited IT budget, which lent itself to an out-tasked or outsourced solution.

Best Deployment Scenarios and Case Studies

Solution provided by Virtela: The Virtela solution included global MPLS network services plus IT infrastructure management of more than 900 devices, including routers, firewalls, IPSs, access points, switches, servers, WAN accelerators, and SSL VPNs. Virtela’s unique design expertise encompassed both network and security elements, leveraging cloud security to minimize the amount of security devices needed to protect all locations. Routing was optimized to ensure that any communication between remote offices, as well as communication between remote office and the data center, flows through an intrusion prevention system in the cloud. This protects the network from threats coming from the WAN and Internet without having to deploy IPSs at multiple premises locations, while also saving on capital expenditures.Virtela monitors the solution via a cloud-based Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) tool which correlates security events across all devices and allows Virtela to tailor processes to the customer’s specific business needs. The implementation process included asset valuation for all of the company’s devices, ranking each in criticality to the business if it was compromised. The asset valuation maps into severity levels that are used by Virtela’s Global Operations Center for alerts and escalations.

Summary: Rather than having disparate processes for each remote LAN, Virtela’s unified monitoring, management, support, documentation and reporting infrastructure consolidated operations for all customer locations under a single umbrella. The company is now protected from worms, malware and other threats -- not only from the Internet but between sites and between buildings on campuses. Relying on Virtela’s services and expertise has resulted in improved uptime and reduction in overall costs to manage and secure the network, and the company continues to deepen its relationship with Virtela.
