 OmniAccess 3500 Nonstop Laptop Guardian

Current Threat:

Increase mobility, reduce risk
As the number of corporate laptops increases, so does the risk they pose.  Every year, hundreds of thousands of laptops — many containing confidential or sensitive data — are lost or stolen. According to a 2006 survey released by the Ponemon Institute, 81 percent of companies surveyed admitted losing at least one laptop containing sensitive information during the previous 12 months.

With the Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess 3500 Nonstop Laptop Guardian, increased workforce mobility no longer means increased risk. Now IT staff can safeguard the sensitive data on employees’ mobile laptops anytime, anywhere, even when the laptop is powered off.

From off-hour downloads of patches and updates, to backups and proactive, real-time response to security loopholes arising through public Internet access, the Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess 3500 Nonstop Laptop Guardian increases productivity, helps enforce 100 percent IT policy compliance and improves business continuity.

Tomorrow's Technology Today:

Give visibility to the mobile blind spot
The Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess 3500 Nonstop Laptop Guardian (NLG) is a secure, always-on 3G wireless platform that gives enterprise IT managers 24/7 visibility of mobile laptop location and health for tracking, troubleshooting and management, even when laptops are powered off or offline.

The Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess 3500 Nonstop Laptop Guardian addresses the enterprise IT challenge referred to as the “mobile blind spot”. When a laptop is removed from the enterprise, the IT department loses visibility of it and, as a result, loses its ability to protect the sensitive data it contains, especially if the laptop is lost or stolen.

With the Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess 3500 Nonstop Laptop Guardian, enterprise IT staff can proactively safeguard both the laptop and its sensitive data. Mobile laptops are always visible, always accessible — even if they are lost or stolen.

Security and simplicity for IT staff and end users
Ever-increasing numbers of remote workers, breakthroughs in broadband wireless access technologies and skyrocketing demand for voice, data and multimedia services — from any location — have led to today’s increasingly complex enterprise service delivery environments.

The challenge of protecting growing numbers of mobile laptops in the face of new threats is mounting. Enterprise IT departments must continue to capitalize on the mobility benefits brought by broadband wireless networks while ensuring that mobile laptops don’t bring dangerous viruses or worms back into the enterprise and that their sensitive data is not exposed to compromise or theft. IT staff need to implement a solution that’s both cost-effective and non-invasive for their end users.

With the Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess 3500 Nonstop Laptop Guardian, increased security does not mean increased complexity. It reduces risk and simplifies security processes for both IT staff and mobile workers. IT staff no longer have to worry about the increased vulnerability of off-site laptop health or threats to the sensitive data they contain. They know they have always-on access to all laptops, no matter where they are. Mobile workers enjoy a streamlined network access experience with automatic backups and software updates. Both parties are free to focus on their primary roles ensuring the productivity and success of the enterprise.

The Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess 3500 Nonstop Laptop Guardian delivers on the promise of simplified, secure, remote enterprise communications through two key components:

• An always-on laptop card featuring a built-in CPU, hardened OS, storage, rechargeable, battery, GPS capability, VPN client and 3G communications.
• A server that is deployed on the enterprise premises to terminate the secure tunnels and to manage user credentials and security policies.

A revolutionary “ignition key” for laptops
At the heart of the Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess 3500 Nonstop Laptop Guardian is a secure, always-on computing system on a 3G broadband PCMCIA data card.  This card acts as the laptop’s ignition key, providing a second or third means of authenticating the VPN connection and delivering 24/7 connectivity to a dedicated management system located in the enterprise.

The card communicates over the enterprise VPN via a server using a 3G, WiFi or wireline LAN connection, giving mobile laptops the same level of security as desktops inside the enterprise.

Encryption keys are stored on the card, safeguarding confidential laptop data. If a laptop is stolen or misplaced, the enterprise IT manager can immediately disable the encryption key in the card, making the laptop data unreadable. If the laptop is later located, the encryption key can be re-enabled to restore all laptop data.

All employee laptops become part of a trusted network, no matter where they are located.

Benefit from new advances in mobile laptop security
• Secure mobile laptop data, access and management through always-on 3G communications
• Gain 24/7 visibility and control through an independent, trusted and verifiable platform

A trusted computer- within- a- computer
Features resident on the secure laptop card include:
• An embedded CPU and self-contained, hardened operating system
• A rechargeable battery that supplies power to the card when it is on standby or shutdown
• 3G communications virtually anywhere there is mobile phone reception
• Non-volatile flash memory to store software updates, patches or downloads while the laptop is powered off
• GPS capability for locating lost or stolen laptops
• Secure communications over the enterprise VPN with no additional software required on the laptop

Conclusion: 24/7 secure mobile laptop data, access and management - End users experience increased performance and ease of use - IT managers experience greater visibility and control over remote devices.
