TDS Telecom rolls out its fastest broadband service speeds with Action V1000H router

Background: As the eighth largest telecom provider in the U.S., TDS Telecommunications Corp. (TDS®) connects people with broadband Internet, phone, and TV entertainment services in hundreds of rural, suburban, and metropolitan communities in 30 states. With more than 40 years of experience and 1.2 million equivalent access lines in service, customers can select from the latest technologies, including: VoIP (managedIP) phone service, dedicated Internet, data networking, and hosted-managed services. In total, approximately 2,700 people work for TDS both in local communities and at TDS’ national headquarters in Madison, Wis.

Challenges: Home broadband use is undergoing a significant transformation, fueled by increasingly advanced entertainment and productivity applications. For example, a growing number of professionals are working from home, putting increased pressure on upload/download usage. And a growing number of entertainment applications, are dependent on the Internet, particularly OTT video. 1 million AppleTVs were sold in Q4 2010 and Netflix boasts over 16.9 million subscribers, 66% of which stream video (source: GigaOM).For those people working from home, streaming videos from Netflix, or gaming online, faster broadband speeds are essential. TDS needed to roll out a new VDSL2 service (with 25 Mbps download/5 Mbps upload) to meet the needs of the high end, heavy data user. This level of increased service requires a robust home router. TDS needed a residential router that could meet the higher throughput speeds, power a wide range of demanding multimedia applications inside the home, perform reliably from day one, and offer robust security to protect the data and home networks of TDS’ subscribers. The company’s choice was particularly critical to the success of the service roll-out, as premium customers require a high quality, seamless experience.

Solution provided by Actiontec Electronics: TDS selected Actiontec’s V1000H Wireless N Modem Router based on the product’s performance, throughput speeds and reliability. This router is designed to fuel the next generation of xDSL, HDTV, IPTV, and Voice over IP services. It offers the high performance to simultaneously support demanding multimedia applications, including HDTV, standard TV, Voice over WiFi, media sharing, and online gaming. The wireless-enabled gateway supports WEP, WPA, and WPA2 encryption. Unique IDs are assigned to each wireless gateway to prevent hacking. The V1000H includes a fully customizable firewall with Stateful Packet Inspection, denial of service protection, content filtering, intrusion detection,WPA/WPA2 and WEP wireless encryption to keep unwanted visitors from accessing the home network.Actiontec has already been a key partner in TDS’ broadband deployments since 2004 and has delivered multiple ADSL, VDSL, and fiber routers to TDS. As such, Actiontec was already well familiar with TDS’ network architecture and customer needs. Product marketing, engineering, and sales teams collaborated early on to define TDS’ key requirements for their VDSL2 deployment, including throughput speeds and support for multiple connections/HD streams. Through a mixture of high level and technical discussions, Actiontec had a strong understanding of all product requirements in order to deliver a product that met these needs. While introducing the new service to its markets, TDS focused on promoting both the latest VDSL2 service, along with the V1000H, which was dubbed “a new, cool, wireless gateway.” The advanced functionality of the router offered a compelling reason for TDS subscribers to upgrade their service. TDS’ marketing materials emphasized the following features of the router: •4 Gigabit Ethernet switch ports to connect home devices at lightning speeds•High-power 802.11b/g/n capability•Advanced wireless security•Full routing and port forwarding (particularly useful for online gaming)•Speedy 5 Mbp

Summary: As TDS’ VDSL2 service was just launched in December 2010, it’s too early to provide hard numbers. However, the company has seen strong interest in this premium service from its customer base. Service was first launched across seven states (Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, New Hampshire, Tennessee, Vermont, and Wisconsin) in December, and the higher speeds will be offered to TDS customers in 13 more states in the first quarter of 2011. Early customer feedback has been positive. And TDS Telecom has been very happy with the V1000H’s performance in their network, including the product’s service speeds, reliability, and stability. With the service’s 5 Mbps upload, customers can perform online backups and upload photos five times faster than with TDS’ previous services. In addition, the V1000H will become an important piece of TDS’ future residential broadband plans. TDS plans to deploy the same router for their fiber broadband services. In addition, the two companies have been discussing a range of future applications and developments.
